Vocational Skills for Special Children

The transition from childhood to adulthood can be challenging for individuals with special needs. These individuals continue to have unique requirements as they grow older. Any negligence in addressing their pre-vocational skills during their developmental years can significantly impact their ability to enter the workforce and lead an independent, self-sustainable life. It is beneficial to introduce skills applicable in a work environment. These skills can have a significant impact on their cognitive development, overall quality of life, and well-being. By providing appropriate support and fostering these skills, we can empower them to thrive in adulthood.

Developing Academic Abilities

A vocational skill set extends beyond manual labor and trade expertise. The present-day multifaceted job landscape demands special academic proficiencies for handling complex tasks. It is important for children with special needs to develop functional academic skills. These enable them to enter the workforce armed with fundamental skills such as numerical calculations, effective verbal communication, and writing.

Finding the Job

Children with special needs require job-related skills and guidance on how to secure employment. A pre-vocational curriculum can cover essential job-seeking abilities, such as searching for job openings, knowing where to look for them, creating a resume, and preparing for job interviews. These skills can be further enhanced by adding specific topics such as effective communication techniques, the use of computers to find and contact potential employers, and understanding the process of completing a job application.

Vocational Skills Training Program for Children with Disabilities

Our goal is to provide skills to children with special needs and youth without special needs, addressing the issue of youth unemployment and creating a brighter future for all.
We provide training for children with special needs/disability and youth without special needs. Some of the Basic Vocational Skills include:

Making of:

  • Table cloth
  • Envelopes
  • Paper bags
  • Computer skills
  • Floor mats
  • Craft bags
  • Bangles
  • Ear rings
  • Necklaces
  • Hair Dressing
  • Baking
  • Laundry Skills

This training focuses on understanding the child’s abilities, interests, and parental expectations through an assessment process. Based on the assessment, we develop a vocational skills training program that focuses on the child or client. We provide supervision and necessary guidance during the learning process. Currently, we are working on expanding our vocational skills unit at our center to offer a wider range of skills for better outcomes. However, due to limited finances and resources, we have not been able to implement all our plans yet. Nevertheless, we remain hopeful that we will achieve our goals in the future.

Children with special needs or disabilities have diverse skill requirements, but not all possess the same learning capabilities to acquire and excel in them. Hence, it is important that vocational trainers working with these children conduct a vocational assessment to determine their interests, abilities, and skills to prioritize and teach in sequence. Occupational therapists can play a crucial role in this process, providing valuable insights through activity analysis and grading techniques to facilitate effective learning and skill progression.

Vocational skills training should ensure equal opportunities for everyone. Whenever feasible, individuals with disabilities should receive training alongside those without disabilities under the same conditions. It is crucial to enhance access to education, training, and continuous learning for individuals with special needs identified at the national level. This includes children, youth, people with disabilities, migrants, older workers, indigenous people, ethnic minority groups, and those who are socially marginalized.
